American Photography at the Rijksmuseum
The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam opens its doors for a unique journey to the United States with the exhibition American Photography. For the first time in the Netherlands, the museum presents a major overview of American photography history, from the 19th century to the present. With more than 200 works, this exhibition offers a fascinating look at the real American, the American Dream and unexpected recognition - perfect for Amsterdam residents, expats and tourists who want to discover something new.
The exhibition takes you through the eyes of American photographers, from legends like Robert Frank, Diane Arbus and Richard Avedon to lesser-known and anonymous creators. Their works - ranging from art and news photography to intimate private snapshots - show how photography has shaped American identity. Iconic images go hand in hand with surprising finds from the Rijksmuseum's impressive collection, complemented by loans from Europe and the US.
In addition to the exhibition itself, there are numerous ways to dive deeper into the story. Listen to the podcast in which curator Mattie Boom talks with Humberto Tan about her favorite works, or join the lecture with Q&A for additional background. The audio tour, available in Dutch and English, lets the photographers themselves talk about their creations. And don't miss the photo gallery, where Carrie Mae Weems' powerful series of Painting the Town for the first time in the Netherlands.
